About MLD

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system helps our body maintain healthy fluid level, remove cellular debris, and harmful substances from the tissue. This is why good lymphatic drainage is a key component to a strong immune system.

The Vodder technique is a combination of light skin stretching movements that stimulate the lymph nodes and increase the flow of the lymphatic fluids. The lymph vessels are located just under the skin so this should not be confused with traditional massage which works deeper on the muscle. MLD is recommended for anyone who wants to boost their immune system. It can help people with fibromyalgia, migraine, stress, insomnia, and traumatic edema. It is recommended after surgery to reduce swelling and scar tissue.

Benefits for the skin

MLD promotes the movement of lymph which helps remove waste and therefore reduce swelling and puffiness in the face. It encourages the delivery of oxygen as well as improved hydration to the skin cells leading to a much healthier and glowing completion.

The importance of Post-Operative Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Post-op Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized, gentle technique designed to support the body’s natural lymphatic system during the healing process after surgery.

After procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck, BBL, breast surgery, or other cosmetic procedures, the body naturally produces inflammation and fluid as part of healing. When lymphatic flow is temporarily slowed or overwhelmed, fluid can accumulate in the tissues, contributing to swelling, tightness, discomfort, and a feeling of heaviness.

How post-op MLD helps

  • Encourages lymphatic circulation and supports the movement of excess fluid.
  • Helps reduce postoperative swelling and congestion as the body heals.
  • Supports tissue recovery by promoting circulation of lymph and removal of cellular waste.
  • Can improve comfort and mobility by decreasing the sensation of pressure and tightness.
  • Helps manage fluid accumulation, including areas affected by postoperative edema.
  • Supports a smoother healing process when incorporated appropriately into the surgeon-approved recovery plan.

Post-op MLD is not a deep-tissue massage. The movements are light, rhythmic, and specifically directed along the lymphatic pathways. A properly performed treatment should never be aggressively painful or forcefully manipulate healing tissue.

Timing is important: when MLD is appropriate depends on the type of surgery, the individual's healing progress, and the surgeon's instructions. It should be performed only when medically appropriate, particularly during the early postoperative period.
